City and water: a stormwater management model for Baku
In his article in MEMAR, Fakhraddin Verdiyev explores how green spaces can become part of Baku’s drainage infrastructure. Planted strips along 8 November Avenue could be adapted as rain gardens and bioswales: shallow landscaped areas that temporarily hold stormwater and release it gradually, reducing peak pressure on the drainage network.
The principle is to give water space within the street. Applying this approach in Baku requires local soil testing, filtration of road runoff, suitable planting and safe overflow routes.
The proposal is a concept, and its performance needs to be measured through a pilot project. The article connects stormwater management with a practical measure of street quality: whether people can use the street safely after rain.
